Abraham Maslow included belonging as one of the human needs where people feel a sense of acceptance and connectedness (friendships, family, intimacy). Adlerian psychology believe that a sense of belonging (social interest) is an essential human need with community feeling and connections. Indigenous People see belongingness as deeply embedded in cultural, emotional, historical, spiritual, and connected to the land. All three view belonging as fundamental for our mental health and well being.
It is important for us to promote and support a greater sense of belonging. Here ware some ways of how this can happen.

When we promote and support a sense of belonging, people feel valued, there is a sense of being part of something, people feel encouraged to participate, there is less anxiety, depression and loneliness, and it can contributes to our resilience.
